Case Making Machines
Short answer
A hardcover case is flat greyboard panels wrapped in paper. The HF-550 makes finished cases up to 1000 × 500 mm at 20–30 pcs/min in one machine. The HF-850A gluing machine and the HF-900 four-side wrapping machine do the same job as separate steps.
Overview
Three operations make a hardcover case.
A hardcover case is a set of flat greyboard panels laid on one sheet of cover paper, with the paper folded over all four edges. The gaps between the panels are the hinges. It is the cover of a hardback book, and the same construction makes file folders, calendars, the covers of book-style boxes and the outer case of a collapsible box.
Every case goes through the same three operations: the paper is coated with glue, the boards are positioned on it, and the four edges are wrapped. The HF-550 does all three in one machine, positioning 1 to 6 boards by camera. The other route splits the work: the HF-850A glues the paper, an operator or a positioning machine places the boards, and the HF-900 wraps the four edges.

Automatic Paper Gluing Machine
A gluing machine only: it feeds cover paper sheet by sheet and coats it with glue, for rigid boxes and hardcover cases. Positioning and wrapping are done after it, by hand or on other machines. A cam feeder prevents double sheets. Comes in two widths (HF-650A and HF-850A) and two drive versions (servo and standard).

How to choose
4 things to settle first.
- 01
One machine or two
The HF-550 makes finished cases at 20–30 pcs/min in a single 10.5 m machine with one control system. The HF-850A and HF-900 do the same job as separate steps and can be bought one at a time.
- 02
Spine width and number of boards
The HF-550 takes a middle strip of 10 mm and from 1 to 6 separate boards. If the HF-1050 is used for positioning, its standard minimum spine is 15 mm.
- 03
Case size
Both the HF-550 and the HF-900 go up to 1000 × 500 mm. The smallest finished case is 200 × 100 mm on the HF-550 and 150 × 90 mm on the HF-900.
- 04
Board and paper
The HF-550 takes 1–4 mm board and 80–300 g/m² paper. The HF-900 takes 1.2–4 mm board and 100–250 g/m² paper; the HF-850A glues 80–250 g/m² paper.

FAQ
Which machines are in the HORFON case making machines range?
3 machines: HF-850A Automatic Paper Gluing Machine; HF-550 Automatic Case Making Machine; HF-900 Automatic Hardcover Four Side Wrapping Machine.
Should I buy the HF-550 or the HF-850A with the HF-900?
The HF-550 feeds and glues the paper, positions 1 to 6 boards by camera to ±0.1 mm and wraps all four sides in one 10.5 m machine at 20–30 pcs/min. The HF-850A only glues the paper and the HF-900 only wraps the four sides, so with those two the boards are positioned by hand in between. The HF-1050 is the automatic alternative to that front end: it glues the paper and positions the boards itself, then hands over to the HF-900.
What is the largest hardcover case these machines make?
1000 × 500 mm finished size, on both the HF-550 and the HF-900.
What is the narrowest spine the HF-550 can make?
A middle strip of 10 mm, with 1 to 6 separate boards positioned by a Yamaha robot and two 10-megapixel cameras to ±0.1 mm.
How fast is the HF-900 four-side wrapping machine?
20–30 pieces per minute, for cases from 150 × 90 mm to 1000 × 500 mm. It runs on 220 V at 2.5 kW and weighs 800 kg.
What products are made on a case maker?
Book covers, file folders and calendars, and the covers of wine, tea, mooncake, cosmetic and mobile phone boxes.
