Rigid Box Making Machines
Short answer
A rigid (set-up) box is greyboard wrapped in printed or specialty paper. The steps are: groove the board, tape the corners, glue the paper, position the box on the paper, then wrap and fold. HORFON supplies a machine for each step, or all of them in the HF-5040, which runs 18–25 pcs/min.
Overview
From greyboard to a wrapped box.
A lid-and-base rigid box is two greyboard shells, each wrapped in a sheet of printed or specialty paper. The board is grooved so its walls fold up square, the corners of the folded shell are taped, the cover paper is coated with glue, the shell is set down on it, and the paper is wrapped up the walls and turned in over the rim.
The machines in this category do those steps one at a time, or all together. The HF-1200 grooves, the HF-500 or the hand-fed HF-40 tapes the corners, the HF-850A glues the paper and the HF-450 wraps and forms. Those four make the standard semi-automatic set, in which an operator positions each shell on the glued sheet by hand. The HF-5040 does corner taping, gluing, camera positioning and wrapping inside one machine.
Speeds are quoted in single pieces, and a lid-and-base box is two pieces. A set limited by the HF-450 at 15–20 pieces per minute therefore finishes 7 to 10 complete boxes per minute.

How to choose
5 things to settle first.
- 01
Separate machines or one
The semi-automatic set runs 15–20 pcs/min with hand positioning and can be bought one machine at a time. The HF-5040 runs 18–25 pcs/min with camera positioning to ±0.1 mm, in one machine about 8.2 × 4.2 m.
- 02
Smallest box and board thickness
The HF-450 forms boxes down to 45 × 45 × 15 mm in 0.8–4 mm board. The HF-5040 starts at 65 × 65 × 20 mm and takes 1–3 mm board.
- 03
Where the line slows down
Corner pasting runs 30–55 pcs/min and gluing up to 45, against 15–20 for forming. Forming is the step to add capacity to first.
- 04
Power supply
The HF-1200, HF-500, HF-40 and HF-450 run on 220 V. The HF-850A gluing machine and the HF-5040 need 380 V.
- 05
A route to camera positioning
A Yamaha robot can be added to the servo version of the HF-850A to turn it into an automatic positioning machine, so the servo version is the one to choose if automation is likely later.

FAQ
Which machines are in the HORFON rigid box making machines range?
6 machines: HF-5040 Automatic Rigid Box Making Machine; HF-450 Automatic Rigid Box Forming Machine; HF-500 Automatic Rigid Box Corner Pasting Machine; HF-40 Rigid Box Corner Pasting Machine; HF-850A Automatic Paper Gluing Machine; HF-1200 Automatic V Grooving Machine.
Which machines make up a semi-automatic rigid box line?
Four: the HF-1200 grooves the board, the HF-500 tapes the corners, the HF-850A glues the cover paper and the HF-450 wraps and forms the box. An operator positions each shell on the glued paper between gluing and forming. The HF-450 at 15–20 pcs/min sets the output of the set.
What is the difference between the HF-5040 and the HF-450?
The HF-5040 is a complete line in one machine: paper feeding and gluing, corner taping, camera positioning and four-side wrapping, at 18–25 pcs/min. The HF-450 does the last step only, wrapping and folding a box that is already glued and positioned, at 15–20 pcs/min, so it needs a gluing machine and a corner pasting machine before it.
Which corner pasting machine should I choose, the HF-40 or the HF-500?
The HF-40 is hand-fed and tapes one corner at a time at 10–20 pcs/min; it weighs 180 kg and plugs into 220 V. The HF-500 tapes all four corners in one stroke at 30–55 pcs/min and takes boxes up to 480 × 450 × 150 mm.
What is the largest and smallest rigid box these machines make?
The HF-450 forms boxes from 45 × 45 × 15 mm to 480 × 400 × 120 mm. The HF-5040 makes boxes from 65 × 65 × 20 mm to 500 × 400 × 120 mm.
Does the HF-850A position the box on the paper?
No. The HF-850A is a gluing machine only: it feeds the cover paper and coats it with glue. Positioning is done after it by hand, or the HF-1050 is used in its place, which glues and positions by camera.
How many grooves can the HF-1200 cut at once?
Up to 8 grooves per pass, to ±0.05–0.1 mm, at 25–50 m/min. The groove angle is adjusted on the machine in two ranges, 80–120° and 120–140°.
Often bought together
- Cardboard Slitting Machines Slitting full greyboard sheets into box and case panels.
- Visual Positioning Machines Visual positioning lines that glue the cover paper and place the greyboard on it by camera and robot, for rigid boxes and hardcover cases.
- Drawer Box (Slipcase) Machines Machines for drawer boxes, also called slipcase boxes: deep, narrow rigid boxes formed from V-grooved board.
