Box types
Six box types, each with its line.
Short answer
Rigid box machinery is chosen by the structure of the box. HORFON groups it into six box types: collapsible rigid box, lid-and-base rigid box, book-style and magnetic box, drawer box (slipcase), round box and paper tube and paper card box. Each has its own process, from 3 steps to 7, and its own set of machines.
01Collapsible rigid box
Ships flat and folds up into a rigid box. Made from a hardcover case, wrapped side wings and an assembly step.
5 steps · 8 machines
02Lid-and-base rigid box
The classic two-piece gift box: a base and a lid, each greyboard wrapped in fancy paper.
6 steps · 7 machines
03Book-style and magnetic box
A hardcover case wrapped around an inner box, usually closed by a magnet.
6 steps · 14 machines
04Drawer box (slipcase)
A deep, narrow rigid box, far taller and longer than it is wide, formed from one V-grooved board.
3 steps · 3 machines
05Round box and paper tube
Cylinder boxes in two constructions: flat-edge rigid round boxes and curled-edge paper tubes.
7 steps · 7 machines
06Paper card box
Lids, bases and trays formed from card alone, without greyboard: cake, dessert and hardware boxes.
3 steps · 6 machines

Which one is yours
Tell the box type from its structure.
The name a customer uses varies from market to market. The structure does not, and it is the structure that decides the machines.

FAQ
What box types can HORFON machines make?
Six: collapsible rigid box, lid-and-base rigid box, book-style and magnetic box, drawer box (slipcase), round box and paper tube and paper card box. Each box type page lists the process steps, the machine for each step and the ways to equip the line.
Which box type needs the fewest machines?
The drawer box (slipcase): 3 steps and 3 machines (HF-1200, HF-320 and HF-320A). The book-style and magnetic box involves the most, 14 machines across 6 steps, because the case, the inner box and the closure are made separately and then joined.
Can one line make more than one box type?
Partly. 8 machines are used for more than one box type, for example the HF-1200 (4 box types), the HF-1300 (3 box types) and the HF-1050 (3 box types). The HF-1050 positioning line handles both rigid box shells and hardcover case boards. The forming, wrapping and assembly steps are specific to each structure.
What is the difference between a rigid box and a paper card box?
A rigid box is a greyboard shell wrapped in printed or specialty paper, made by grooving, corner taping, gluing, positioning and wrapping. A paper card box is formed from a single die-cut blank of 210–350 g card, with no greyboard and no wrapping, on the HF-4350 or HF-3250.
Which rigid box ships flat?
The collapsible rigid box. Its side wings fold inward on triangle plates, so it is delivered flat and folded up by the packer. The HF-8020 or HF-800D wraps the wings and the HF-1150 assembles the box at 15–20 pieces per minute.
My box is not one of these six. What then?
Send a drawing or a sample. Several machines handle special shapes: the HF-500A wraps oval, D-shaped and racetrack-shaped boxes, the HF-320A takes hexagonal and octagonal boxes with extra parts, and the HF-600 sprays glue along round and special-shaped outlines.
