Visual Positioning Machines

Short answer

A visual positioning line feeds and glues the cover paper, then uses cameras and a Yamaha robot to place the greyboard on it. The HF-1050 holds ±0.1 mm at 15–30 sheets/min and handles boxes up to 450 × 400 × 120 mm or cases up to 1000 × 500 mm. It replaces both the gluing machine and hand positioning in a rigid box or case line.

Overview

Why the box has to land in exactly the right place.

Wrapping paper around a box only looks right if the box sits in the right place on the sheet. A millimetre off and the print runs crooked along an edge, or the turn-in is deeper on one side than the other. On a hand-fed line an operator lines each shell up against printed marks.

A visual positioning line does this by camera. The HF-1050 feeds the cover paper, coats it with glue, finds where the board has to go and sets it down with a Yamaha robot, to ±0.1 mm. Because it glues the paper itself, it takes the place of both the gluing machine and the hand positioning station.

It positions rigid box shells and hardcover case boards alike. Followed by a box forming machine it makes rigid boxes; followed by a four-side wrapping machine it makes cases.

How to choose

5 things to settle first.

  1. 01

    What goes after it

For rigid boxes, a forming machine such as the HF-450, which wraps 15–20 pcs/min and so sets the line speed. For cases, the HF-900 four-side wrapping machine at 20–30 pcs/min.

  2. 02

    Box and case sizes

    Single positioning takes boxes from 60 × 60 × 15 mm to 450 × 400 × 120 mm; double positioning up to 350 × 180 × 70 mm. Cases run from 150 × 70 mm to 1000 × 500 mm.

  3. 03

    Spine width

The standard minimum spine is 15 mm. Narrower spines need customised parts; the HF-550 case maker goes down to 10 mm.

  4. 04

    Board and paper

    1–3 mm greyboard and 100–350 g/m² paper, on sheets from 100 × 60 mm to 1050 × 750 mm.

  5. 05

    Space and power

    7.0 × 3.5 m, 2,000 kg, 380 V with 7.5 kW machine power and 4 kW of heating, and compressed air at 0.6 MPa.

FAQ

What does the HF-1050 connect to?

The HF-1050 already includes paper gluing, so no gluing machine is needed in front of it. With a corner pasting machine supplying taped shells and a box forming machine after it, it makes an automatic rigid box line. With a four-side wrapping machine after it, it makes an automatic case maker.

What is the smallest spine the HF-1050 can position?

15 mm. Narrower spines need customised parts.

How accurate is the HF-1050?

±0.1 mm, at 15–30 sheets per minute.

Which other HORFON machines position by camera?

The HF-550 case maker, the HF-8020 side wing machine and the HF-5040 rigid box machine all position to ±0.1 mm. The HF-1150 assembly machine places side wings with three vision stations.

Can camera positioning be added to a gluing machine I already have?

On the servo version of the HF-850A, yes: a Yamaha robot can be added to turn it into an automatic positioning machine.
